What Happens During a Hypnotherapy Session?

If you’ve never had hypnotherapy before, it’s completely normal to wonder what actually happens behind the door. Most people who contact me at Active Recovery – Body and Mind arrive with a mix of curiosity and nerves.
The truth is, sessions are usually far more relaxed, normal and enjoyable than people expect.
Here’s what really happens.
We start with a chat
When you first arrive, we don’t dive straight into anything deep or serious.
This is intentional.
It gives your brain a chance to settle, helps you feel comfortable in the room and reminds you that you’re simply talking to another person - not stepping into something mysterious or clinical.
Most clients arrive feeling a little nervous. By the time they leave, they often say they feel refreshed, lighter and surprised by how much they actually enjoyed the session.
The biggest fear people admit
Almost everyone quietly worries:
What if I’m not in control?
What if you make me do something I don’t want to do?
This comes from stage hypnosis, not therapeutic hypnosis.
Hypnosis is simply a relaxed, focused state of attention. You are aware. You are in control. You can move, speak or open your eyes at any time.
Nothing happens without your cooperation.
The talking part of the session
We don’t spend the session analysing problems or digging into the past.
Instead, we focus on:
What has been good since I last saw you
How your brain works and why it may be keeping you feeling anxious, low or stuck
What your preferred future looks like
One small step that gently moves you towards it
Talking about what’s been good might sound simple but it activates the part of the brain responsible for change and resilience. Over time clients naturally start to focus more on what’s going right rather than what’s going wrong.

Then you lie down, get comfortable and relax
When we begin the hypnosis part:
You lie on a couch
You can close your eyes if you wish
You can cover yourself with a blanket
The room is quiet, often filled with natural sunlight
Sometimes you can hear birds outside
There’s nothing dramatic. No swinging watches. No loss of control.
Just guided relaxation where your mind becomes calm, focused and open to helpful suggestions.
Many clients describe this part as a ‘reset’ for the brain.
What people notice after just a few sessions
Clients often report that:
They start focusing outwards instead of inwards
They notice more positive things around them
They ruminate less
Sleep improves, especially when listening to the relaxation recording at night
They begin writing down good things that have happened between sessions
They notice little joys in everyday life again
Often I notice these changes before they do.
A common pattern I see
One client in particular was extremely nervous before starting. They weren’t sure what to expect and worried about the hypnosis part.
After the first session, they said, ‘that was actually really nice.’
By the third session they were looking forward to coming. The nerves had gone, replaced by a sense of calm and trust in the process.
This is very typical.
The sessions feel safe. Predictable. Enjoyable.
Before you even come in
To help you feel comfortable I speak to every client on the phone or via video call before the first appointment. You can ask questions, get a feel for me and decide if I’m the right person for you.
That reassurance before you walk through the door makes a big difference.
What you’ll really experience
You’ll experience:
A calm, friendly conversation
An understanding of what your brain is doing
A sense of hope about where you’re heading
Deep relaxation
And often a surprising feeling of lightness when you leave
Not mysterious. Not scary. Just a gentle process that helps your brain do what it’s designed to do - move you forward.
